Car Hire Tips

With so many different companies to choose from, finding a car to hire is relatively easy. The following tips are designed to make the process of renting a car as straight forward as possible.

1. Bookings Over the Internet

If you book a rental care over the internet make sure you print out a receipt of what you have booked and the price you have agreed along with any relevant emails.

2. Watch out for Additional Costs

Check all additional costs before confirming your booking such as insurance and taxes.

3. Check the Car Before you Leave the Forecourt

It is a good idea to spend a few minutes examining the car for any dents or scratches before you drive it away from the rental car forecourt. If you do see anything wrong with it, make sure that you point the problems out to a member of staff and ask them to make a note of them on your receipt.

This will prevent you from being blamed for damaging the car when you return it.

4. Check the Company’s Fuel Policy

Most car rental companies hire out vehicles with a full tank of petrol. Check to see if they expect you to return the car with a full tank or if you are simply allowed to pay them the cost of filling it up on your return. Do bear in mind however, that the latter is the more expensive option as the company is likely to charge more than the market rate per gallon.

5. Get an Estimate for Repair Works in the Event of an Accident

If you have an accident while driving your rental car go to a garage and get an estimate for how much it would cost to repair it. This will come in handy in the event that the company claims that the repair works cost vastly more than you were quoted for.

It is not a good idea to get the car repaired yourself.

6. Cross Through Empty Spaces on the Return Forms

If there are any blanks on the condition report form that the car rental company completes after you have returned your car, make sure you cross these through and keep a copy of the form. This will prevent the company from adding anything else later.
