Car Safety Tips

Car safety is about two things: staying safe on the roads and ensuring that no-one can attack you whilst you are in your vehicle.

The following tips are designed to help you meet both of these objectives:

  • Always make sure that your car is in good condition before you go on a long drive. For instance, check your tyre pressure and oil levels and make sure that you have a full tank of petrol.

  • It is a good idea to plan your route before you head off. You can use a regular map or service like the ‘RAC Route Planner’ to help you do this.

  • Never go on a long journey without cash, a credit card and your mobile phone in case you encounter problems along the way.

  • Carrying a torch, bottle of water and bar of chocolate in the car can come in handy if you break down at night and have to wait a while for help.

  • Never pick up hitch-hikers.

  • Keep your doors locked while you are driving.

  • If you are driving with your windows open don’t leave your handbag or phone on the seat as someone could reach into your car and steal it while you are stopped at lights or in a traffic jam.

  • If you think someone is following you try to alert other drivers by flashing your lights and hooting your horn. Only stop in a busy place.

  • At night try and park in a busy, well lit place.

  • Have your keys in your hand as you approach your car so that you can get into it quickly.
