Taxi Safety Tips
If you are a woman, travelling home late at night from a party can pose certain risks. Taking a taxi can offer a degree of protection and reassurance because licensed drivers are required to meet a strict set of criteria.
However, even though taking a taxi is safer than using public transport at night, there are still some risks involved. We have compiled the following tips to help ensure that your journey home is as safe as possible.
1. Only ever use licensed taxis. You can check to see if a cab is licensed by looking at the signage on the car, license plate or the driver’s badge.
According to statistics released by the Metropolitan Police, there are more than 200 reported taxi-related assaults every year in London alone. The vast majority of these are carried out by unlicensed cab drivers. Therefore it is advisable to avoid using touts and unlicensed taxis.
2. Before you get into a cab, check that it is the car that you ordered. You can do this by asking the company when you make your booking what make of car they are planning to send you or the driver’s name. If this is not possible, ask the driver the name of the person that they were asked to pick up before you climb into the car.
3. Leave the name of the taxi firm you are using with a friend.
4. Always sit behind the driver because it is hardest for him to attack you in this position.
5. If you start to feel nervous ask the driver to let you out of the cab in a well lit and busy area.
6. Ask the driver to wait until you get inside your house before driving away.
As a woman, you might feel more comfortable using a female only taxi company whose drivers are all women and who only accept women passengers.
