Applying for Jewish Schools
Applying for a Jewish school can be fairly complicated; particularly if it is the first time you have been through the process.
This article highlights some of the main things that you might want to consider to help make your application as straightforward as possible.
Choosing a Jewish School
Choosing a school where your child will fit in and be happy is vitally important. Visiting the school or schools you are interested in before going through the admission process is therefore highly recommended (see Choosing a Jewish School for more information):
Admission Criteria
All schools will be able to provide you with information explaining their admission criteria.
This criteria varies from school to school, although all schools will ask for proof that your child is Jewish.
To give you an idea of some of the other requirements that you might have to meet, some schools stipulate that:
‘Admission to the School will be strictly confined to children of parents who are able to demonstrate commitment to Orthodox Jewish traditions and practices.
This will be assessed through the application form and interview, where the family's commitment to Orthodox Jewish traditions and practices must be demonstrated by reference to active Synagogue membership, adherence to Jewish religious dietary laws, involvement in Jewish communal life and participation in Jewish adult education.’
It is also worth noting that some Jewish schools have nurseries attached to them. It is often the case that they prioritise applications to their primary school from children who already attend their nursery.
Admission Process
- If your child meets the admission criteria, you will need to complete an application form which you can get from the school office.
- You must make sure that you submit your form before the cut off date for applications that the school has set. Ideally however you should aim to submit it a few weeks ahead of the deadline.
- Schools will ask you to supply proof that your child is Jewish in the form of your Ketubah and his or her birth certificate with your application.
- Some schools may require that you attend an interview
