The Case for Jewish Schools

With more and more parents choosing to send their children to Jewish day schools, we examine why they have become so popular.

Since the 1950s the Jewish population in the UK has declined by more than 25%. Yet, despite this, the number of children attending Jewish schools has risen by a staggering 500% over the same period.

In fact, according to statistics, the number of children being sent to Jewish schools has doubled every ten years or so since the 1950s. The total number of children being educated at a Jewish nursery, primary or secondary school currently stands at around 22,000.

It seems that there are a number of possible reasons for this trend. According to some sources, fears about assimilation and mixed marriages in later life are encouraging many parents to think about Jewish education. The hope is that by sending a child to a Jewish school they are more likely to establish a Jewish social life and strong identity that will stay with them as they grow up.

For religious families sending their children to Jewish schools provides an easy way for them to observe festivals and laws that would be much more difficult in the secular system. After all, Jewish schools’ holiday times are based around the religious calendar which means that children do not have to take time away from school to observe festivals. Furthermore, school lunches adhere to kosher laws.

The high academic standards achieved by Jewish schools is another reason why so many parents prefer them. Indeed, over recent years they have outperformed a number of prominent secular schools with regards to public examination results.

Ultimately, it seems that the main reason why so many parents are choosing to send their children to a Jewish is to enable them to receive a first rate academic, religious and cultural education.
