How to Choose an Accountant

If you run a business you will have to keep a number of different financial records and file various types of accounts. Using an accountant to do this for you can help save you time, as well as giving you the peace of mind that you are doing everything that you are legally obliged to.

As every business has different requirements it is important to find the right accountant for you. We hope that the following tips will help you do this:

Ask prospective accountants:

  • What experience they have working with companies of a similar size and in the same sector as yours?
  • What are their fees and what do they include?
  • Who will your point of contact be?
  • What other services do they offer? For instance, if you are a small business you might want to use your accountant’s office as your Registered Office address.

Narrow down your list of prospects to three or four and try and visit each of the ones on your shortlist to see which firm you prefer.

You might want to think about:

  • How well the accountant you meet answers your questions. Does he/she use a lot of jargon or speak in plain English
  • Who do you feel most comfortable with
  • How conveniently located are their offices

Once you have chosen an accountancy firm let them know that you want to appoint them. They will then send you a letter of engagement which is effectively a contract between the two of you detailing their fee structure and both parties’ responsibilities.
