How to Choose a Simcha Venue

Regardless of what kind of simcha you’re planning (be it a barmitzvah, wedding or birthday party) choosing the right venue is key to its success.

You’ll find lots of potential venues in our directory and using the checklist below you’ll be able to decide on the perfect spot for your party!

1. Is the venue large enough?

You might have found the most beautiful room for your daughter’s wedding but if it isn’t large enough to accommodate all of your guests comfortably then it just won’t work.

Remember, rooms always look much bigger when they’re empty. Put in tables, chairs, a band and dance floor though and you’ll find that they start to fill up very quickly- and that’s before you’ve even added the guests!

Of course if you have really fallen in love with a particular place you can always restrict your guest list so that you can still use it.

2. Does the shape of the room work for the simcha that you are planning?

The venue that you choose must be able to accommodate the type of simcha that you are planning.

For instance if you want to have a drinks reception before dinner and dancing afterwards the place you choose should allow you to do this. In other words, it will probably need to have a separate area for drinks so that your guests don’t have to cluster around tables and it will need to be large enough to fit a dance floor and band or DJ.

3. Is the space restrictive?

Are there inconveniently placed pillars in the room or other obstructions that will divide it up and obstruct people’s view and undermine the party’s flow?

Does the shape of the room make it feel cramped in certain areas?

4. Is the venue private?

The location of the venue you are considering is important. If you are thinking about a reception room in a hotel you might want to find out whether there will be other events taking place at the same time as yours. If there are, you might find guests from the different parties crossing paths and if this is something that would bother you it is better to find out how likely it is to happen sooner rather than later.

5. What is the light in the room like?

Are there windows in the room? What is the lighting like? Light really creates an atmosphere so it is a good idea to visit a potential venue at the same time of day that you have chosen for your simcha to check that it meets your requirements.

6. Can you vary the room temperature?

If you are planning a party in the height of summer you might want to find out whether the venue you are thinking of has air conditioning.

7. Does the room have enough plugs?

If you are planning to have a DJ you will need to make sure that there are enough plugs (in the right location) for all the equipment that will be needed.
