Table Plan Tips for Simchas

Deciding where to sit people at a simcha can be a real headache. You have to figure out who will get on well with whom, whom you have to keep apart and where to position the tables to ensure the best flow.

We hope that the table plan tips below will help smooth the process.

Where to Seat People

  • It is customary to place your closest family and friends at tables nearest to yours
  • If you have round tables you usually put couples next to each other
  • If you have long tables you usually put couples opposite each other
  • You don’t HAVE to seat couples next or opposite each other but they should be on the same table
  • Ideally you should try and seat your friends near to people they know to make them feel comfortable and help the conversation flow easily
  • If not all of your friends know each other, make sure people are seated near people with similar interests or experiences

Table Plans

  • It can be helpful to place a printed table plan outside the reception room so that people can find where they are sitting easily
  • Listing names alphabetically with their table number printed next to their name makes it very easy for people to find their tables
  • You might want to think about having a diagram showing the table layout to help your guests locate their tables
  • If you are having a themed party, you might want to give your tables names instead of numbers

Place Cards

  • Place cards help to make sure that people sit where you want them to
  • You should use the same format on your cards as you did on your invitations. For instance if you used first names only on your invitations then you should also do this on your place cards. However if the invitation was addressed to Mr Joshua Blum for instance, then this is the name that should appear on the place card.
  • Place cards are usually handwritten
